New Programme Leader appointed for Theology, Music, and Worship LST Introducing: Daniel Johnson

We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Dr. Daniel Johnson as Lecturer in Theology and Worship Studies, as well as the new leader of the Music and Worship Department.

Daniel previously served as Head of Worship Studies and Head of Academic Development at Nexus Institute of Creative Arts and has also been a visiting lecturer at several universities, including LST. We’ve asked him to share a brief introduction about himself, and his thoughts on joining us:

“I’m delighted to be taking up this role at LST. My PhD concentrated on Isaac Watts (“When I Survey the Wondrous Cross”, “Joy to the World”) and I’m more broadly interested in the Evangelical Hymn tradition. In the autumn of 2024, I was a visiting researcher at the John Rylands Library, Manchester, where I began researching the ways hymns were used in the contexts of slavery and abolition.”

“As well as these areas of research, I’m a keen guitarist, having been gigging since my teens. So while I it’s great to be taking up the opportunity to lecture, lead the Music and Worship department, and carry on my research, I’m also looking forward to chatting about guitars, BBQs, and how Newcastle United are getting on. It feels like I’m joining at LST at an exciting time, and I hope to build on the great work that the department has been doing. It feels like we have a great opportunity to serve churches across the UK and beyond, and I can’t wait to get started. I’m a part of Redeemer Church, Nottingham, I’m married to Rosanna, and we have four children.”

Daniel will join Sunil Chandy, Steve Thompson, Christopher Grey, and a dedicated group of visiting tutors in teaching our newly accredited Theology & Worship Studies programme. Celebrating its 28th year, the Music and Worship Department remains central to life and study at LST, and continues to stand out in Europe for the depth and range of its offerings.
