Professor Scott Spurlock

trustee

Scott Spurlock is Professor of Scottish and Early Modern Christianities at the University of Glasgow, where he has taught in the School of Critical Studies since 2019. His scholarship centres on Scottish Reformed ecclesiology, Protestant dissenting traditions, and the global connections forged by Scottish missionary and ecclesiastical activity – work that has taken him deep into archives on both sides of the Atlantic and, increasingly, into partnership with historians in South Africa exploring the shared and contested legacies of Scottish mission there.

Scott’s academic life has always run alongside active service to the wider scholarly and ecclesial community. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He currently serves as President of the Scottish Church History Society (2023–26) and edits the journal Scottish Church History. He co-edits the ‘Scottish Religious Cultures’ series for Edinburgh University Press and a further series for Palgrave Macmillan, ‘Christianities in the Trans-Atlantic World’, and he has developed collaborative teaching of Church History with partners in South Africa and Sweden. In 2026 he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Divinity by Lund University in recognition of this body of work.

Raised as a General Baptist and deeply shaped by his undergraduate education at George Fox University, an Evangelical Quaker university, he is a member of the Church of Scotland and serves as a member of its Theological Forum. Scott also serves on the council of Trinity College Glasgow, which along with the University of Glasgow, will serve as the lead training provided for initial ministerial education for the Church of Scotland from 2027.
